Anhand einer Marktanalyse entschlüsselt die vorliegende Arbeit die DTC-Branche und zeigt auf, dass die online verfügbaren Gentest-Angebote auf nahezu alle Lebensbereiche des Menschen ausgerichtet sind. Die Angebote genetischer Analysen reichen von der Auswahl des optimalen Partners über Vaterschaftstests bis hin zur Erhebung genetischer Risikoprofile für Krebserkrankungen oder die Vorhersage der Lebenserwartung; sogar Analysen des gesamten menschlichen Genoms sind über das Internet bestellbar und können ohne ärztliche Begleitung durchgeführt werden. Der Trend der Online-Gentests demonstriert eindrucksvoll die neuen Herausforderungen unserer Zeit. Vor dem Hintergrund aktueller technischer Entwicklungen in der Gendiagnostik setzt sich die Arbeit mit der rechtlichen Zulässigkeit sowie den Chancen und Risiken auseinander, die mit der Durchführung kommerzieller Erbgut-Analysen verbunden sind. Dies eröffnet sowohl die ethische Diskussion um Online-Gentests als auch die Frage nach Lösungsansätzen. Ob und inwieweit gesetzgeberischer Handlungsbedarf besteht, wird abschließend anhand von Lösungsmöglichkeiten erarbeitet.
